English singer Anna Calvi and David Byrne (Talking Heads) teamed up to record a cover of ‘Strange Weather’, originally by Keren Ann. The song will be released on 14th July as a part of the 5 track covers EP, produced by Thomas Bartlett, who previously collaborated with bands such as The National i Antony and the Johnsons. Haunting cover and you will definitely hear strong Anna Calvi’s influence here.
British duo The 2 Bears have released a video for their new single ‘Angel (Touch Me)’, to be found on their forthcoming album The Night. The song itself with its very light, delicate beat could appear a bit boring, but the video is worth watching 🙂
The boys from Django Django are not idling time away. While working on their second album they found time to record a nice cover of ‘Porpoise Song’ (originally by The Monkees from 1968). Gentle psychedelic journey. And those vocals! Beautiful. ❤
The song will be released on the band’s ‘Late Night Tales’ mix, which comes out on May 12.
Jamie xx (known as a producer from The xx), has shared his new track titled ‘Girl’ which comes along with a fantastic, abstract video. The hypnotic electronic song with an impressive bassline will be out as a single on May 5 and apart from ‘Girl’, you’ll also find there b-side track, ‘Sleep Sound’. Both are just excellent, pure quality!
UK trio London Grammar have shared a new music video for their beautiful track ‘Sights’, which will be out as a single on June 1. At first glance the clip shows Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman and Dot Major performing live, but there’s a little twist at the end. Very intimate scenery for very emotional song.
Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip is about to release his new solo album, Await Barbarians, on June 10. Here’s the first glimpse of it, ‘Elvis Has Left the Building’. Very soothing song with a nice lyric video if you want to sing along 🙂
Check out this London-based rising electronic singer. Camden Cox has just released a video for her ‘Kinda Like’ track which is her first song running online. At first glance her music seems to share the common ground with artists like AlunaGeorge, Grimes, BANKS or Disclosure. Very promising girl. Kinda like her.
San Francisco-based Thee Oh Sees have unveiled not-surprisingly psychedelic, animated video for ‘The Lens’ from their upcoming record ‘Drop’ (out April 19). Surreal visuals perfectly go together with classic, orchestral bassline and soft vocals. Good one!
This new rework from Todd Terje is unreal. ‘Johnny And Mary’, originally performed by Robert Palmer, takes here totally different dimension with subtle beats and vocal contribution from Bryan Ferry. You would never guess it’s actually Todd Terje’s work. Mesmeric, beautiful cover!
The track appears on the forthcoming Todd Terje’s LP ‘Album Time’, out April 8.
And one more gem from Mr Albarn – ‘Mr. Tembo’, which is a happy tribute to… an elephant. Yes, Mr. Tembo is an orphaned baby elephant that Albarn met during his recent travel to Tanzania. The elephant must have been a sweet thing as the song is definitely much more upbeat and joyous than anything else released off ‘Everyday Robots’ to date. Emotional, delightful story. Awesome!
After ‘ Lonely Press Play’ here’s the next track from the Damon Albarn’s forthcoming solo album ‘Everyday Robots’ (out April 28). ‘Heavy Seas of Love’ features vocals from Brian Eno. Charming track, can’t wait for the album!
Nicolas Jaar again teamed up with Sasha Spielberg (yes, daughter of the famous director) and as a duo called Just Friends they released a new track ‘Don’t Tell Me’. Stunning vocals and minimalist, delicate beats make it very soulful ❤
Very nice 8-minute long track from Friendly Fires in collaboration with Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay (aka the Asphodells). ‘Before Your Eyes’ is the first single from the British band since their 2011’s Pala. Definitely more hypnotic and psychedelic than their previous productions, still very impressive though.
Ah Sweden, Sweden, you spoil us again. Yet another gem from the north. Lykke Li has shared her new, nostalgic track ‘Du är den ende’ taken from the soundtrack for the new Swedish crime thriller ‘Tommy’, where she also appears as an actress. The movie is directed by Tarik Saleh.
One more reason to love Sweden: Amason. This great collaborative project features some of the best Scandinavian talents: Pontus Winnberg of Miike Snow, Gustaf Ejstes of Dungen, Nils Törnqvist, Petter Winnberg of Little Majorette and Amanda Hollingby of Idiot Win. Watch the animated video for this supergroups’s latest single ‘Ålen’. Lovely track with angelic vocals.
LA-based singer Jillian Banks, simply known as Banks, has shared a new, very sensual video for her latest single ‘Brain’. Thrilling, surreal and mysterious visual experience. There’s some magic about this girl, worth keeping an eye on.
Shortly after ‘When Girls Collide’, múm have released another great track. Mellow ‘Saddle Up’ was one of the B-side songs on their latest limited edition disc, alas sold out now. Worth streaming though!
And another quite unexpected collaboration: Moby and Washed Out. Check out the Moby’s rework of ‘All I Know’. Not bad, although I personally prefer the original, more psychedelic, version. BUT, if you let it go on Soundcloud, there’s a nice playlist coming afterwards 😉
In case you haven’t heard it yet, here’s something absolutely magnificent. Mark Smith (Explosions in the Sky guitarist) and composer Matthew Cooper, a.k.a. Eluvium, have created a new band called Inventions. ‘Entity’ comes from their self-titled LP which is set to be released quite soon, on April 1st. Wonderful, space, dreamy experimental ambient. If you ever got blown away by Sigur Rós, you’ll love it.
Yet another talented British dj, Lockah, is about to release his debut album and here’s a little preview of it. Fabulous game of balearic synths and drifting melody. 4,45 min of holiday, you can afford it 🙂
The full 45-minute album, which consists of 13 tracks, will be out on April 14th.
